KIGALI - The Rwanda Electricity Corporation (RECO), has announced that it targets to connect 100,000 new clients to the national grid, every year.

This was disclosed by Charles Kanyamihigo, the head of electricity department at RECO.

"The government has a target of 50 percent of the population having access to electricity by 2017, which is why we set the goal of connecting at least 100,000 households every year,” Kanyamihigo said.

He expressed optimism in achieving this target since all necessary infrastructure and personnel are in place.
Kanyamihigo further noted that RECO has finished replacing underground electricity cables in several parts of Kigali City.

He told The New Times that, last year; there were 846 electricity sites with underground electricity cables which were supposed to be replaced, and so far, 718 have been completed.

The remaining will be replaced before the end of this month, he said, adding that the entire exercise will cost an estimated Rwf530m.
