KIGALI - The police have appealed to lawmakers to enact more stringent laws against drug dealers. The call was made on Monday during a security meeting held at the City Council.

In his presentation, the Regional Police Commander, Kigali City, Chief Supt Rogers Rutikanga, said that the use of drugs in the City is one of the major causes of insecurity.

"I call upon you as MPs to amend the law concerning drug dealers because the punishments given to them do not match with the gravity of this crime,” Rutikanga said. 
Six Members of Parliament from the Committee in charge of Security and Territorial Integrity, were meeting security officials in Kigali City as part of the anti-drugs awareness campaign.

Julienne Uwacu, the chairperson of the parliamentary committee, noted that there was need for constant sensitization of the youth to fight against drugs and to report drug dealers to concerned authorities on time.

She further called for institutional collaboration in order to prevent further cases of grenade attacks around the city and called upon the security organs to re-enforce night patrols.
