KIGALI - The Senate yesterday approved the nomination of Alphonse Munyentwari, as the Governor of the Southern Province. Munyentwari, who was the Mayor of Nyamagabe District, replaces Fidele Ndayisaba.

Before his approval, Munyentwari was interviewed by the Senatorial Standing Committee on Political Affairs and Good Governance chaired by Joseph Karemera.
Karemera later presented a report about the interview to a general session.

"He has diverse knowledge in leadership and financial management; we interviewed him on a number of challenges facing the Province and he knew about them and had strategies to address them,” Karemera said.

Munyentwari worked with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda before being appointed Mayor of the then Nshiri District, then went on to head Nyamagabe district.

His appointment as the Governor is attributed to the hard work that saw Nyamagabe transform from a hunger-stricken district to one that is food secure as well as a model for other districts in terms of development.
