The Amavubi Stars arrived in Port Sudan last night, their venue for their opening match of Group D match against Senegal tomorrow in the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The team arrived in Khartoum on Saturday morning aboard Ethiopian Airways and travelled by road to Port Sudan where they reached yesterday.

Port Sudan will be the venue for all Group D matches that comprise of only three countries (Rwanda, Angola, and Senegal) following the withdrawal of Tunisia due to political unrest.

According to team’s media person Fred Muvunyi, the players are in good condition though they will only have today to hold light training before tomorrow’s game.

Sellas Tetteh’s team start their quest against Senegal on Monday and a win for the Amavubi team will send them into the quarter finals of the continental tournament reserved players playing their domestic leagues.

Senegal are the top Group D seeds on the back of reaching the semi-finals two years ago. After the Monday’s opening fixture for Amavubi, they will play their final group match against Angola on February 15.

The 2011 edition opened in Khartoum on Friday night with hosts Sudan securing a 1-0 victory over Gabon in Group A.
Elitaib Mohamed Mudathir netted the lone goal in the 18th minute off a rebound that the Gabon defenders failed to clear out of danger.

Meanwhile, defending champions DR Congo start their title today against Cameroon and 2009 hosts Ivory Coast entertain Mali in Group C.

The Congolese are heavily reliant on players from Fifa Club World Cup runners-up TP Mazembe, with 11 of the 23-man squad hailing from the Lubumbashi side.

Algeria got off to a flying start in this year’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) by defeating Uganda 2-0 on Saturday.
