NORTHERN PROVINCE

BURERA — Police in Kivuye Sector this week burnt marijuana worth Frw493,400 and local potent gin called kanyanga reportedly smuggled into the country from Uganda and DR Congo.

Residents gathered to witness the burning of an estimated 1,680 litres of kanyanga, 1,700 sackets of chief waragi and four kilograms of marijuana.

The district mayor Aimé Bosenibamwe warned all residents to desist from the habit of drug trafficking saying, there was a risk of taking other poisonous drugs disguised as kanyanga.

Meanwhile, police in Musanze are holding a 23-year old man identified as Theophile Urinzwenimana who was arrested with over 3,400 sackets of marijuana he claims to have bought from Gisenyi.

Illegal in Rwanda, article 273 of the penal code stipulates maximum sentence of five years imprisonment on being convicted of drug trafficking.
