GICUMBI - Scores of eligible voters yesterday turned up at various polling stations in Gicumbi District, to elect village administrative committees and other leaders at the grassroots level.

Residents lined up behind their preferred candidates from 9.30 a.m., and by 1.00 p.m., most polling stations had wound up the election exercise in this sector.

The elections at Ngondore Cell playground brought together eligible voters from the cells of Ngondore, Kibali and Kivugiza while residents of Nyakabungo Cell conducted their elections at Kibali Primary School.

Kabingo village in Kivugiza unanimously elected Jean Claude Misago with a total of 115 votes as their representative to the cell Advisory Council.

"I am extremely happy for Kabingo residents’ confidence in me and I promise that I will represent them ably,” said Misago.

At Kibali Primary School, the elections for women representatives at the cell were hotly contested.

Epiphanie Mukandagijimana scooped 467 votes and Epiphanie Mukanoheli 302 votes, beating four other candidates as Nyakabungo Cell women representatives.

By press time, Gicumbi District electoral coordinator, Richard Gakwerere said the exercise was going well in the 109 sites across the district.
