One dies as ONATRACOM bus overturns

Ngoma - At least one person died and more than a dozen were injured, yesterday evening, in Gahara village of Ngoma District, when an ONATRACOM bus rolled down a steep hill.

Eye witnesses believe 45 passengers were on board when the bus rolled down the hill, killing the driver and severely injuring several passengers.

The driver of the bus died at Kibungo Hospital due to over bleeding, while passengers are admitted at the same hospital in critical conditions.

According to Julliene Imunkurize, one of the nurses attending to the patients, the passengers were severely injured.

"It was a horrible accident...the survivors are in critical condition. Hospital staff is busy trying to save their lives. Unfortunately, the driver died on arrival at the hospital due to severe bleeding,” she said.

Raul Mugabo, a driver and a resident of the area said that there is a sharp corner at Gahara that has been a major accident spot.

He said that the vehicle could have had brake failure, hence failing to negotiate the sharp corner.
Police said they are still investigating the cause of the accident.
