RDB’s project with former poachers is commendable

Editor, The move initiated by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in 2002, to have poachers abandon hunting, has not only saved wild life, but also resulted in the development of communities surrounding game parks. I visited an association of former poachers known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village located in Kinigi and the group is doing a great job in conserving the environment in the Virunga Mountains.

Former poachers have formed dance troupes that perform for a fee

Editor,The move initiated by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in 2002, to have poachers abandon hunting, has not only saved wild life, but also resulted in the development of communities surrounding game parks.I visited an association of former poachers known as Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village located in Kinigi and the group is doing a great job in conserving the environment in the Virunga Mountains.

These former poachers, have gone a step ahead and are involved in activities aimed at sensitizing those still involved in poaching.

RDB, has helped the members of the association to start up income generating activities including, basket weaving, formation of dancing troupes and wood work, to mention but a few. Their welfare has greatly improved as a result of the activities.
