Rwamagana - Rwamagana Hospital has started providing full dental care to a population that previously experienced great difficulties in accessing dental services.

According to Doctor Avit Mutaganzwa, the newly acquired dental chairs have increased access to dental care and motivated many patients.

The Doctor, however, said that despite steady improvement in dental services, cases remain high, only second to malaria.

"Dental problems account for 8.2% of the total cases in the district...this is just second to malaria. That we have acquired new dental chairs and related apparatus, makes it possible to offer commendable services to patients,” he said.

"Dental healthcare is a core component of good health and wellbeing. We plan to give the population the dental health care attention it needs.”

Innocent Twagirumukiza, who works with the hospital’s dental services said the new equipment has drastically improved the services.

"Unlike the old ones, today we have chairs that can be fitted manually operated unit or fully automatic unit as desired. This has eased the work of doctors and at the same time helped patients,” he said.

Margaret Nyinawumuntu, 60, a patient who had just received dental service at the hospital, told The Sunday Times that the new chair is doing a fantastic job.
"This is not the first time I have had one of my teeth plucked out…but today, I never had problems, as they adjusted my head to access the wrong tooth,” she said.

The hospital’s dental care department is understaffed with only three staff  from Kigali Health Institute.
