The Primary Leaving Examinations results are out. What caught my attention was news reported in your paper about the 50-year old Gatsibo man who failed the exams. Despite the poor performance, he says he wants to join the 9- year Basic Education and continue with his studies.

While he may be allowed to continue, is it really advisable, considering his poor grades? If he does continue, there is still the possibility that he will fail again.

The idea of automatic promotion may be shared by many other pupils who performed poorly. But it will affect them through the whole education cycle, since they need to apply the knowledge learnt at the lower levels. They should repeat and work hard to pass the exams next time round instead of seeking promotion
