KIGALI - The National Electoral Commission has began distributing new voter’s cards to be used in the forthcoming local leadership elections.

The elections are slated to begin on February 4 and will run through to March. Leaders will be elected right from the village level up to the district. Kigali City will also hold elections for Mayor.

Grass roots elections will include election of Advisory Councils from the village up to the district level and City of Kigali and administrative councils at all those levels.

According to Charles Munyaneza, the Executive Secretary of NEC, the commission found it paramount to distribute new cards ahead of the elections because the old ones are considered worn out.

"The current voter’s cards are the ones that we have been using in all past elections so they had run out of space,” he said.

Munyaneza added that cards will be given out to those who had lost their cards and first time voters.
