KIGALI - The Indian community in Rwanda, under their umbrella association, the Indian Association of Rwanda (INAR), yesterday, celebrated the 62nd Republic Day of their country, in a flag hosting function held at UTEXRWA grounds in Kigali.

The ceremony was opened with the unveiling of the India National Flag by the INAR officials.

Speaking at the event, Srinath Vardhineni, the General Secretary of INAR said that the Republic Day was first celebrated when the Constitution of India came into existence.

"Our constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, when India became a Republic and we usually celebrate the day,” he said.

"The day is also celebrated to honour the ‘Declaration of Independence of 1930’ from the British Rule”.
He stressed that they are very happy and proud to live in Rwanda adding that the country is one of the safest and most secure in Africa.

"We appreciate the good bilateral relations existing between the two countries which is usually shown by the Rwandan officials who frequently visit India,” he said.

Vardhineni noted that Rwanda has an immense potential and opportunity for investment and that they are encouraging more Indians to come and invest in Rwanda.

INAR provides a common identity to the Indian community in Rwanda through the promotion of unity, friendship and goodwill based on mutual understanding and cooperation.
