Rwanda’s songbird, Shanel, is set to attend the 2011 World Stage Festival to be held from April 27 - May 1, 2011 in Canada.

Speaking to The New Times, the actress/singer said the opening night will feature the reception of Isoko’s acclaimed play ‘The Monument’ and a discussion about the play.

In this electrifying drama, a young soldier is convicted of crimes committed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Just as he is about to be executed, a mysterious woman, who is both his saviour and tormentor, offers him freedom − at a price.

Staged with song and African drumming, this highly physical and imagistic production puts its finger on the pulse of humanity, as it paints a contemporary portrait of a country, whose resilient voice continues to be a beacon of hope and reconciliation.

Isoko theatre is an intercultural company founded in 2008. It uses contemporary theatre to contribute to civil society, social development and creative economy in Rwanda.

The festival will provide Toronto audiences the opportunity to see unrivalled theatre, dance and music from the globe’s leading artistes.

Shanel, real name Ruth Nirere, is well-known for her great talent and extreme ability to capture the audiences.

The 25-year-old star has had major roles in two films, "The Day God Went Away’ (2008) and ‘Long Coat’ (2009).
