Kayonza - A 22-year-old man died after he was attacked by unknown assailants armed with machetes at his house. The incident took place in Nyagatovu village of Mukarange sector in Kayonza district, on Monday.

The District Police Commander (DPC), Superintendent Richard Rubagumya said Alex Niyongira, who suffered facial and head wounds, died on the spot.
He added that all the suspects are going to be tracked down and punished.

Niyongira‘s body was discovered after three days and several suspects have been detained, according to Police.
"We are holding some suspects, but what is evident is that he could have been killed by his close pals. The man lived alone …because the killers locked the house after killing him, it took time for neighbours to realize that he was missing,” police said.

Eugene Gasangwa, the Executive Secretary of the area, said that the deceased was targeted by a suspected group of criminals.

He said that the victim was robbed of a bicycle, radio and unknown amount of money.

"The deceased was a Burundian national working on a farm of one prominent businessman in Kayonza, called Jean Damascene Gakuba. The deep cut on his neck and head, indicated the use of machetes,” he said.

Jack Gafaranga, a resident of the same village said that such killings were rare in their village.

He, however, warned that idle and youth addicted to alcohol and loitering in the villages posed potential threats to the public.

"It is unfortunate that we have lost the most humble young man in our village. He could have fallen prey to unruly youths in our community. We should cooperate with police to isolate the criminals,” he said.

Investigations are still going on pending possible prosecution.
