GISAGARA/GICUMBI - Local populations, the army and police officers in several parts of the country, this week, embarked on activities geared at eradicating thatched houses commonly known as Nyakatsi.

In Gisagara District, Southern Province, the volunteers leveled the ground and made bricks that will be used to construct houses for the vulnerable in the area.

It was also agreed that such initiatives be conducted once a week until all thatched houses are replaced.
Governor Fidel Ndayisaba, called upon residents to embrace and contribute to the programme, saying it would help everyone live in decent housing.

"We should stand together and help our neighbors who still live in Nyakatsi. We must help the old, vulnerable people to get rid of those huts,” Ndayisaba said.
In November 2010, the Southern Province had more than 33,000 thatched houses. But according to Ndayisaba, the number has drastically gone down to only 3,000.

Gisagara Mayor, Leandre Karekezi reminded residents that they should spearhead efforts to improve their social welfare.

"It is your duty to get a decent home. Of course, others will come in to help you, but only to supplement your efforts,” Karekezi observed.

Meanwhile, in Mahaza Cell in Rulindo District, a total of ten plots were cleared for the construction works.

RDF soldiers led by 503 Acting Brigade Commander, Col. Andrew Habyarimana, together with district officials and residents, also made bricks for the construction of the houses.

"Our target is to construct a total of 50 houses for vulnerable residents, living in Nyakatsi before the end of March,” said Mayor, Justus Kangwagye.
He disclosed that the World Vision had pledged to donate 500 iron sheets towards the construction in Ntarabana Sector. 

In Gicumbi District, 408 Brigade Commander, Col. Chris Murari, led soldiers in the community work to eradicate Nyakatsi in Gatobotobo Cell. A total of six plots were prepared for construction of new houses.
