Bugesera-Residents of Rweru sector in Bugesera district have been advised to grow more tomatoes for commercial purposes.

The call was made by the Governor of the Eastern Province, Dr. Ephraim Kabaija, urging the farmers to take advantage of their proximity to Lake Rweru to boost commercial agriculture.
He was addressing hundreds of Rweru residents, who were involved in construction of houses for the vulnerable.

The Governor said that it is important that people sustain themselves financially and ensure food security.

"You are strong men and women...lakes are just in your midst, you can use it to boost tomato production,” he said.

"Tomatoes can offer you enough income to build decent houses. We shall avail you with packaging facilities so that you look for markets with ease.”

Bugesera Mayor, Louis Rwagaju, said the few farmers who have been engaged in tomato growing in the area have been successful.

"Ten tomato growers were recently given Rwf 15 million each; they bought trucks and are doing their business perfectly. There is no reason why others cannot emulate them,” he said.

At the event, residents and local leaders helped construct over 20 houses for vulnerable families.
