Musanze -The official launch of the eradication of grass thatched houses, commonly known as Nyakatsi, in the Northern Province yesterday, began with hundreds of residents, army and police personnel joining hands to build better shelter for 30 families in Shingiro Sector, Musanze District.

The provincial Governor, Aime Bosenibamwe, set a deadline for the completion of the construction of houses for the vulnerable, saying that the authorities will not destroy existing houses of the families without giving them alternative shelter.

‘’Before the houses are complete, we shall displace occupants from their huts or destroy the houses (Nyakatsi) because this may leave them without shelter especially during this rainy season,’’ Bosenibamwe, said.

Speaking to the residents during the launch, the Minister of Internal Security Musa Fazil Harelimana urged residents to embrace government programmes which he said aim at eradicating any forms of inequalities amongst residents.

The province has set March 30 as deadline for the elimination of the over 9,800 huts in the province.
