The local basketball federation (Ferwaba) has lined up an All-Star tournament this weekend to officially tip off the 2008 season.

The development was reached last Saturday when the federation convened at their Remera premises to draft this year’s calendar.

According to Ferwaba’s technical advisor Innocent Karuhije, the tournament will showcase Rwanda’s top players as they square off in different departments ranging from, dribbling, three-point shootouts and dunks amongst others.

"The select teams will be mixed up with both league and national team players so all basketball fans should expect a thrilling event all the way," Karuhije disclosed before adding, "There’s no doubt that fans will experience the thrill of watching the country’s top players in action". The tournament tips off on Saturday with the preliminaries before winding up on Sunday with a grand finale.

Meanwhile, Timothy Muvunyi also reports that Rwanda’s oldest basketball club Espoir led by Ferwaba’s president Fidele Rutagarama smacked MOD 63-53 on Sunday to win the inaugural veterans’ tournament at Amahoro courts.

The tournament attracted seven clubs including ARAB, Electrogaz, Mirror, Cercle Sportif and Kimisagara.

After the tournament, the event organizer Stratton Ahimana said the tournament is aimed at attracting young players, more fans and most importantly fostering solidarity amongst veterans.
