RWANDA succumbed to second position in Group A following a 0-1 loss to Senegal in the final group stage action of the Africa U-17 Championship yesterday at Amahoro stadium.
A 85th minute strike from Toure Mamadou Saliou ended Rwanda’s quest of topping Group A as rivals Burkina Faso hammered 1997 champions Egypt 4-0 at Stade de Kigali.
Saliou unleashed a long range shot past goalie Marcel Nzarora with five minutes to the end of the game thus enabling ten-man Senegal team to return home with three points in bag.
The Junior Wasps displayed a poor quality game and failed to convert ample of goal scoring chances even when Senegal were reduced to ten players following Samba Ndiaye’s suspension due a professional tackle on midfielder Innocent Mugabe in the first half.
At Stade de Kigali, Traore Bertrand Isidore scored a brace on 38th and 74th minute, Faical Ouedraogo and Zaniou Sana added a piece each as Burkina Faso thrashed Egypt to affirm their place in the semi finals of the African Championship.
The victory for Burkina Faso earned them top spot in Group A with six points and an automatic qualification to the Fifa U-17 World Cup finals due in Mexico later this year.
Burkina Faso is the second country to join hosts Rwanda in the World Cup finals while Egypt and Senegal have been eliminated from the competition.
Burkina Faso and Rwanda are jointly tied on six points but the West African team tops the group with a superior goal difference over the hosts. Senegal and Egypt are third and fourth placed with three points each.
Both Rwanda and Burkina Faso will know their semi final opponents after today’s final group B matches scheduled to be played at Stade de Kigali and Umuganda stadium respectively.
