KIGALI - The Rwanda National Police (RNP), yesterday, received seven vehicles and 100 computers worth Rwf227m from the Belgian Development Agency (BTC).

The equipment is meant to strengthen the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The Commissioner General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, received the equipment which was handed over by Jean Yves Saliez, the BTC Resident Representative, at a function held at the police headquarters in Kacyiru.

Gasana thanked BTC for supporting the force, and added that the equipment would help improve the force’s performance.

"This support has come at the right time. We are now on the right track in implementing our duties. It will further strengthen our activities,” Gasana said.

BTC, last year, gave the police 36 vehicles.
"We are here to assist our partners,” Saliez said, adding that BTC this year will train 600 police officers in various fields.

Other equipment to be given to the police include, 30 motorcycles, 30 cameras, 30 photocopying machines and equipment for the Kigali Forensic Laboratory (KFL) which will help in criminal investigations.

The support is part of a Euros 4 million grant from BTC to build the capacity of the CID department over a period of three years from 2009.
