Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), on Wednesday, intercepted and impounded an estimated one tonne of smuggled goods.

According to RRA, the impounded truck contained whisky, cartons of Samba Waragi, Supermatch cigarettes, 203 kg of polythene and other household goods

"Smuggling is a very common practice and we arrest smugglers almost every day with such huge consignments,” said Innocent Mugiraneza, the head of RRA in Rubavu, Nyabihu, and Ngororero districts.

Two suspects identified as Didier Musonera, Hamza Nsengiyumva are in police custody at Gisenyi Police Station, while another, Patrice Mavubi is believed to be on the run.

"Fighting this vice is not easy since smugglers have very many tricks, but in partnership with other stakeholders such as the police,  the army as well as local leadership, we try to minimise it,” said Mugiraneza.

Mugiraneza also cited the challenges in fighting smuggling in the area, saying the stretch of Lake Kivu which smugglers use is not easy to fully patrol.

He also encouraged the local population to report smugglers since they interact with them on a daily basis.
