High population growth issue must be addressed urgently

Editor,

I would like to thank the lawmakers for the proposed move to hold an open dialogue on the country’s efforts to reduce the population growth rate. Our population growth rate of 2.7% is very worrying and if a comprehensive strategy is not adopted soon, the alarming growth will significantly impact on the available resources.

I was shocked to read in your newspaper that, Rwanda is currently ranked number 21 among the countries with the highest population growth.

I remember sometime back, there were moves by lawmakers to limit couples to no more than three children because of rising population growth rate. What happened to this wonderful idea?

Religious leaders should participate in this struggle and educate their followers about family planning and the negative impact of rapid population growth on the country’s  development.

The media must also report more on the issue.
