CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye has rubbished rumours that the future of Africa’s oldest football competition- the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup hangs in a balance after the emergence of the Nile Basin tournament.

The inaugural tournament which is on-going in Egypt has received lavish praise for its good organisation and some believe it threatens the future of the Challenge Cup.

"I don’t have any problem with the Nile Basin tournament. It’s up to members to decide whether they want to only play in this tournament or to also feature in the Challenge Cup,” the official said.

"Cecafa governs all regional tournaments so if anyone wants to jeopardize that, we will complain to Caf (Africa’s football governing body),” he added.

According to reports, the Nile Basin tournament, organized by the Nile Basin Football Federation is set to be an annual event. Egypt, who are the brains behind the event are even willing to provide financial support to other countries willing to host the tournament.
