The Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Murigande, has commended Nyamasheke parents and teachers for working together to construct classrooms for the Nine -Year Basic Education (9-YB E) programme in the area.
"We highly appreciate partnership between head teachers and parents in the exercise so that classrooms are available next academic year,” said he.
However, it was noted that the construction works appeared to be very slow in some schools which were destroyed by the 2008 earthquake.
The minister advised concerned authorities to speed up the work, adding that renovation works were supposed to have been concluded last year.
Murigande also challenged parents and teachers to jointly ensure students’ discipline.
"Education without discipline is nothing. We should ensure that discipline comes first and knowledge next. We don’t want to bring up citizens who lie, steal or indulge in crime,” he said.
Parents commended the government for aiding them in the renovations.
"We are pleased and are earning money from jobs we get at these schools, but we are more pleased about the fact that our children are going to get enough classrooms and a better education,” said one of the parents.
