KIGALI - The draft law that will establish the structure, organization and functioning of the National Children’s Commission (NNC), has been forwarded to parliament.
The commission, which will operate under the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF), will act as the central authority in all child-related issues, including protection, promotion and development.
"If it is passed and later promulgated by the President, the commission will take over the duties that have been assigned to a department in the ministry,” said MIGEPROF Director General, Alfred G Karekezi.
He noted that the creation of an independent commission for children’s affairs, will increase the efficiency of how child-related cases are handled.
The duties of the body will include, developing a child adoption policy and evaluating and monitoring child protection.
The development comes as a result of a request by children made during the last National Children’s Summit, an annual forum that brings together children to discuss and showcase their contribution towards national development.
