KIGALI - The Kigali Independent University (ULK) has got a new Rector after the former head’s term of office expired this year.

Dr. Ezechiel Sekibibi has come in to replace Prof. Alphonse Ngagi who has been at the helm of the institution for the last four years.

In an interview with The New Times yesterday, the incoming Rector said that he is going to work on strengthening research at the university.

"Research is a very vital component because it helps in identifying problems that affect our nation. So I am going to build on what I have found in place and strengthen it more so that the university can be able to contribute in addressing national issues in all areas,” said Sekibibi.

He added that he would also focus on improving the quality of the teaching staff through the use of tools that the university already has in place.

"I want to make sure that service delivery at ULK reaches to an international level during my tenure because it is one of the factors that will bring in more students and also help improve the reputation of the institution,” Sekibibi

ULK is one of the biggest private universities in the country with a population of 11,338 students, according to the 2010 statistics. It has two campuses; one in Kigali and another in Gisenyi, Rubavu district.

Dr. Sekibibi 43, holds a PhD in Business Administration from the Philippine Christian University.
