Kirehe - Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) has halted trailers transporting goods without commercial licences, at Rusumo border.

A long stretch of parked trucks could be seen at the Tanzania-Rwanda border.

In an interview yesterday, Stephen Karinganire, RRA Customs Manager Rusumo border, said that the transporters lacked important documents for their business.
He said that the transporters normally find themselves in such circumstances at the beginning of each New Year as the one-year licences are normally acquired at the beginning of each year.

"Each semi-trailer pays USD 200, while a trailer pays USD 400,” he revealed.

Samson Mahim, a driver working with Bridge Ways transport company, admitted that they suffer similar delays every beginning of the year.

He said that truck owners don’t care to pay for the licences in time, hence victimising the drivers.
"It is true our trailers don’t have what is known as T65 Licence. Unfortunately the drivers are the victims; a journey that is supposed to take a week, takes a month and we are not compensated,” he said.

Abdul Mpandugi another Tanzanian driver said that the RRA authorities should have been flexible and devised other means of having the licences paid.

The licences concern every type of motorized vehicle used for commercial purposes, such as transportation of goods, merchandise and fuel.
