Of course not!

Ivan IV Vasilyevich, a.k.a, Ivan the Terrible, was a Russian prince who lived in 1533 and terrified his land and neighbours for a good period of time.

One notable horror is the way he punished his enemies by sticking huge sticks through their butts and hanging them out in the sun to dry.

Every time I would read about the things Ivan did, I imagined whether all Ivans in the world, including me, are doomed to become animals that are capable of such despicable horrors; luckily enough for me, that is just one of the many persistent superstitions and not reality.

It’s outright silly, with all due respect, for people to look up the meaning of their names, hoping that their lives will be changed and influenced in a good way, simply because of their name.

Parents all over the world have been careful enough to give good sounding names to their children; for some, it is simply so that their children can have names that rhyme and are easy to pronounce, to others, their kids names are meant to emulate a good person who passed away or a friend they dearly love.

On the other hand, we also have parents who really don’t care about the names of their children… I won’t mention the names I find funny because I respect people’s choices, but I’ll just use an illustration.

Let me say I decided to call my first born child "Bosco Icyaha”, does this mean he will become more sinful than all his friends? Of course not! You may find him a more humble and god loving child than a certain Prosper Nkundimana (name came up randomly so don’t complain).

There is no set formula to people’s behavior, as a matter of fact, names, if anything, are the biggest camouflage to people’s real behavior.

Character, whether good or bad, is developed by very many factors that in long run affect behavior. If a kid grows up around quarrelsome parents, regardless of whether they name her Peace or Calm, chances are that she will become a bitter and hateful child because of her parents’ influence.

If you are a parent and want your children to have a commendable character, I say take them to church, if you want them to be prosperous in life, pay for their school tuition; as simple as that, instead of giving them the nicest names and believing that you job is done.

It should not be ironic that prisoners and policemen, teachers and students, soldiers and civilians, politicians and voters all share the same names. Not a single name can claim domination over a certain profession.

If you are out there and hate your name, for some reason you don’t like it and associate it to all the bad things that have happened to you, get a life and style up!

I assure you! Even if you change it to something you think is better, your worries will stay with you. It’s not your name, but rather your attitude you must change, your CV you need to enrich or your debts you have to pay.
