KIGALI - Seven people were, yesterday, treated to minor injuries after a tortoise shell grenade, that one of the victims, had picked by the roadside, exploded in the Nyamirambo, police said.

Police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, told The New Times, shortly after the incident, that at around 11:20 am, in the sector of Rwezamenyo, three children including 11-year old Jamal Nsengimana picked a grenade, and started playing with it and in the process; it exploded and injured seven people.

"All the injured were rushed to Kigali Central Hospital (CHUK). Fortunately, all those who were injured are in a stable condition and the injuries are minor,” Kayiranga said.
As investigations continue, Kayiranga appealed to people who still illegally keep arms, including grenades, to hand them in voluntarily or risk prosecution when caught.

"We appeal to people who still have these arms to voluntarily report or hand them in – at any police station near them or to local leaders. If anyone brings in a weapon, they won’t be punished.”
