Rwanda Red Cross (RRC) yesterday donated an assortment of goods worth Rwf 3 million to vulnerable people including orphans in Nyamata and Ntarama Sectors in Bugesera District.

The donation which included clothes, blankets, food stuffs and home utensils were handed over by RRC Secretary General, Apollinare Karamaga.

"We wish you a happy and prosperous New Year and may the Almighty God bless you all,” Karamaga said as he handed over the goods.

He also highlighted the way forward for the RRC`s development strategy in improving the lives of vulnerable people through eliminating grass thatched houses locally known as Nyakatsi.

Recently, RRC launched a campaign in Bugesera that saw it join other stakeholders in the fight against grass thatched houses.

The project that will see 30 families get new modern houses kicked off  with five houses currently under construction.

"We aim to completing these houses in the shortest time possible and we are sure that by early February, we shall hand them to you ,” Karamaga told the residents.

The houses under construction have two bedrooms, a sitting room and a small store and according to Karamaga, the project will cost Rwf 36 million.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Alice Mahoro, 35, appreciated RRC`s activities in changing their lives for the better.

"We are happy and we now feel we are part of the Rwandan community due to the care and love you always show us,” Mahoro, a mother of two, said.
