Today marks the beginning of yet another year – 2011. Last year was significant in many ways. It was a year when the Rwandan people expanded on, and consolidated the achievements they registered over the last 16 years.
Within the last year, Rwandans proved that, indeed, the country is on the move, and nothing will stop the people from living in unity, with a common goal, values and aspirations.
2010 will go down in history as a year which strengthened our resolve and purpose as a people, whether on the political, social or economic front. From January, when the highly revealing Mutsinzi Commission report on the downing of the Habyarimana plane was released, to December, when the fabulously successful Eighth National Dialogue was held, Rwandans recorded victory after another.
It was in the year 2010, when the Rwandan people, once again, demonstrated a high level of political maturity and sophistication as they overwhelmingly and peacefully voted, in record turnout, for incumbent President Paul Kagame, who campaigned on a platform of an unparalleled performance record.
Economically, while many countries turned to austerity measures owing to the global economic downturn, Rwanda continued her impressive performance, with several sectors registering commendable progress. And, the country continued from where it had left the previous year in Doing Business, earning herself another recognition by the World Bank, for being among the top global business reformers.
As we usher into the New Year, we should proudly reflect on last year’s achievements, draw inspiration and get down to work to ensure that 2011 becomes even more successful. Happy New Year!
