The Interfaith Commission for Rwanda has hailed the National Electoral Commission (NEC) for peacefully and successfully organising the 2010 Presidential elections.

The Commission is composed of Muslims, Protestants and Evangelical churches that promote unity and reconciliation of the Rwandan people.

Speaking at the event, on Monday evening, the chairman of the Commission, Rtd Anglican Archbishop, Emmanuel Kolini, said that what NEC did was extraordinary.

"I have never seen or read in books where Presidential elections were held in a peaceful and organised manner like the way our country’s elections were held,” he said.

"I was so surprised to see polling stations properly organised and decorated like wedding receptions... in other areas, they are usually characterised by violence, and no organisation at all. NEC did a wonderful job”.

Kolini added that NEC prepared well for the elections and exhibited a high standard of organisation, which added confidence to the process.

"We thank God that Rwandans are coming out of darkness into the light,” he added.

Prof. Chrysologue Karangwa, the Chairman of NEC, thanked the clerics for showing their gratitude. He added that religions have a major role to play in promoting peace and guiding Rwandans towards development.

Karangwa also thanked the religious leaders for encouraging Rwandans to vote.
