Kayonza- Police has warned residents of Eastern Province against taking the law into their hands and general criminality.

ACP Sam Karemera, the Regional Police Commander, Eastern Province, issued the warning following yesterday’s shooting in Kabarondo market of a tax collector.

Valentine Uwingeneye was yesterday shot dead, while she was on duty collecting tax in one of the busiest market in the Province.

One of three men, near where the woman had reached collecting taxes, used a pistol to shoot her, without any argument.

The deceased shot in the stomach, later died at Kabarondo Health Centre as a result of over-bleeding.

Two prime suspects are in police custody, while the man who pulled the trigger is still at large.

Karemera said that people trying to injure or kill their colleagues for any reason will be dealt with accordingly.

"We are still searching for the murderer who escaped. It is a question of time and he will be in the hands of the police”.

"Let this be clear to all potential criminals...we are not going to give them room. The two recent cases of murder will be handled according to the law,” he said.

The killing of the tax collector follows last week’s death of a businessman in Rwinkwavu Sector, who was also shot dead.

Anastase Barinda, the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs in Kayonza district lamented the death of the woman.

He said that the deceased was a humble servant of the district, who never had any problem with people.

"I am deeply saddened by the death of this woman. She served diligently and had no social problems with people. We are going to work with the police to bring to book the culprits,” he said.

Fredrick Ndahimana a resident of Kabarondo said that there are dangerous group of redundant youth that should be watched closely.

"It’s high time we started keeping a close eye on suspicious characters. The people who attacked the tax collector were drinking in a bar near the market. They behaved strangely,” he said.
