Only one road accident was registered on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day across the country. It claimed one life.

The lone accident occurred in Rubavu District, Western Province on Friday at about 19:30 hours when a vehicle knocked a male pedestrian who died instantly.

The deceased was taken to Rubavu hospital for postmortem. The suspect, whose name could not be identified by press time, is currently held at Rubavu Police Station.

Traffic Police chief, Chief Supt Vincent Sano, said, yesterday, that the accident was caused by over speeding.

It is the first time only one accident is registered on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the last three years, and Sano said that "this was because of the measures initiated to ensure road safety during the festive season.”

Among the measures, he said, is the deployment of more traffic officers on roads, especially in Kigali where most road accidents are normally registered. The other, he said, was sensitising the public to be vigilant.

Police also sent messages on people’s handsets, to drive safely, not to drive when drunk and parents to be responsible enough not to allow their children under 18-years of age to go in bars and night clubs.
