The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called upon the general public to be watchful and cooperate with the security organs in ensuring security during the festive season.

In an interview yesterday, Police Spokesperson, Supt Eric Kayiranga , said that the force has put in place mechanisms to ensure a peaceful season, among them being maintaining public order, conducting patrols and more presence in public places like supermarkets and passenger terminals.

Kayiranga appealed to the public to report any cases of insecurity using the help lines, 112, 3512 (GBV), 3511 and 110.

3511 is a toll free line provided to report police officers’ misconduct while 110 is a marine line.

"We are now working hand-in-hand with hospitality operators, such as hotels, night clubs and private security agencies and church leaders on how better security should be maintained during this period,” Kayiranga said.

He added that the force has increased its capacity by training its personnel, acquiring equipment to enhance its activities to maintain security in the country and at entry points.

"This (security) will be effective by working hand-in-hand with community policing committees and sharing information,” he said.

Kayiranga also cautioned all those organizing entertainment shows in the course of the season to acquire prior permission from concerned authorities and inform police to provide security to avoid any inconveniences.

Traffic police chief, Chief Supt Vincent Sano observed that road accidents are high during the festive season as a result of drunk and reckless driving, and appealed to road users to abide by the traffic rules.
