KIGALI - The School of Finance and Banking (SFB), with effect from next academic year, will add the Department of Economics to the catalog of departments it currently operates.

The department will offer a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree Programme in Economics as well as executive training on Gender Responsive Budget (GRB).

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the Vice Rector for Academics, Dr. Papias Musafiri Malimba, said that SFB had deemed it important to introduce the department due the market’s demand for economists.

He added that they were approached by players in this industry to introduce the department because of the good quality of the graduates from other departments.

According to Malimba, graduates from this department are particularly needed in the banking and insurance sectors.
Malimba added that despite having limited resources, they had been able to acquire highly qualified faculty members.

He added that, as a way of ensuring high quality graduates in the economics department, the management of SFB had set strict criteria for admissions.

Applicants must have at least principal pass of grade B in Mathematics and Economics at advanced level National Examinations.

The 4-year degree programme will be for only full time studying.
