KIGALI - As a way of improving their services, the Rwanda National Police (RNP), has extended the working hours of the Motor vehicle Inspection Centre (MIC) in Remera, Gasabo District from 11 to 13.

This was disclosed yesterday by Supt Benoit Nsengiyunva, MIC Commanding Officer during an interview.

"This was done to increase on the effectiveness and efficiency of the centre, and through this, we will be able to inspect more vehicles,” said Nsengiyunva, adding that the centre has also increased the number of service providers from 20 police officers to 60.

Established in 2008, MIC is aimed at curbing down the rate of road accidents caused by mechanical problems of vehicles.

With the extension of the working hours, Nsengiyunva said, they are now capable of inspecting over 200 vehicles daily, up from 120.

"All the vehicles that are brought here daily are inspected, each vehicle inspection takes less than 15 minutes,” Nsengiyunva noted.

By November this year, the centre had inspected 27, 998 vehicles, with over Rwf 284.2m generated from inspection charges. Last year alone, the centre generated over Rwf 296m from the 29, 480 vehicles inspected.

Nsengiyunva also said that they are currently upgrading the centre from the current two mechanical control lines to four by next year.

"When they are complete, all vehicles in the country will be inspected,” he said.

The centre currently inspects only public and transit vehicles. Nsengiyunva said that other officers will next month be sent to Germany to acquire more skills in vehicle inspection.
