Dear Editor,

On Sunday, February 4, an earthquake hit Rwanda in the areas of former Cyangugu province leaving many dead and numerous properties lost.

When disaster befalls fellow country men, I thought that it is only wise to act faster in helping the victims than waiting for hand-outs.

However, the reality dawned on me when, many of these victims were left homeless and starving until today. It is indeed a great pity that Red Cross officials were one of the first groups to give a helping hand. These poor victims have not even been given beddings or utensils by their Rwandan brothers. Instead, we sat back and waited for nature to take its course. It is a shame that we should always wait for help from abroad and yet we can also offer save ourselves. We should instance offer a blanket, mattress, etc, according to our capacities. This should begin with the district leaders. After all, one by one makes a bundle and half a loaf is better than none. We can put smiles on the faces of our brothers and sisters by the help we offer and enable them live better lives.

This does not me
