The houses were given to orphans and vulnerable people in Kamegeri Sector who could not afford decent shelter.
According to Dr Bernard Nzigiye, the president, Rwanda Red Cross, the houses were donated as a way of supporting the government policy of ensuring that all Rwandan citizens reside in decent shelter, and getting rid of grass-thatched houses, commonly known as Nyakatsi.
Most of the beneficiaries were living in grass-thatched houses and according to their testimonies, during rainy season their roofs leaked.
Rwanda Red Cross assured the recipients that in addition to the shelter, they would be facilitated to start up income generating activities and also join cooperative societies as a way of lifting them out of poverty.
Alivera Ntawukuriryayo, one of the beneficiaries and a widow, gave testimony on how Red Cross Volunteers have supported her and her family by paying school fees for her children.
