Dear Editor,

Allow me to extend my gratitude to Ubudehe project (rural based development programme) which donated heifers to about seventy families in Mugesera sector, Ngoma District. Mugesera becomes the fourth sector in the district to get Ubudehe cows after Karembo, Jarama and Gashanda sectors.

The criterion that was used to supply these cows was good; where by only residents deemed capable of caring for the animals actually got them.

For a long time, farmers in the rural areas have been complaining of the luck of fertilizers. These complaints -I suppose- have been brought to an end because fertilizer will now be provided by the animals and it will be easy for Early Infant Diagnosis to be carried out.

I suggest that the beneficiaries should properly look after the animals and facilitate the chain of transferring the calves to other residents in future.

I also advise the Ubudehe committee in the different sectors to regularly monitor the health of the animals sector with veterinary staff. Veterinary drug shops should also be constructed for easy accessibility.

However, a cow in a home is not an end in it’s self but it helps in improving the general welfare of a family.
