Gatsibo – Police in Gatsibo District are holding two men for attempting to bribe a traffic police officer.

Eric Bahezande and Elijah Rutembesa were arrested, last week, arrested while attempting to bribe a traffic police officer who was on a check point in Kabarore town, Gatsibo District, with Rwf10, 000.

According to police officials, the suspects, who were driving a taxi omnibus Reg: RAB 535M, had been stopped by a traffic officer to check their driving documents. "One of the suspects handed the driving documents, with Rwf10, 000, to the officer. When he saw the money, he immediately arrested them,” a police official told The Sunday Times.

"Police is intensifying its anti-corruption campaign, and we are getting results,” said one of the commanding officers at Kabarore police post.

Speaking to The Sunday Times,   the suspects denied bribing police, saying they had forgotten the money within their drivers’ documents.

"I was driving from Ngarama Sector. Before leaving the place, a friend of mine gave me the money and I kept it with my driving permit and other documents. But when police stopped me, I was very scared and forgot to separate the money from my documents. I didn’t intend to bribe him,” said Bihezande, the driver.
