People are now careless on what they eat or how their entire lifestyle is because the holiday season is here with us again. With that comes preparing for holiday gatherings and dinners, and having fun with friends and family. But what are we doing to prepare ourselves for the season?

With the parties, food, drink, and holiday shopping comes increased stress. It is now more important than ever to take action to stay healthy during the holiday season so we can participate in every event feeling great.
Basic tips for staying healthy during the holiday season include:

1. Get enough quality sleep: Quality sleep between the hours of 10pm and 2am are most regenerating for the adrenal glands, which control a large portion of the body’s hormonal system. Too much stress hormone will decrease immune function. I know that during the festive season people sleep few hours due to excitement, nonetheless try to sleep as many hours as possible for a healthier you.

2. Exercise: A natural stress and pain reliever. It also boosts the immune system. During this holiday, one can choose to either go for an early morning walk or a midday swim since the weather during this time is usually very hot. Holiday shopping can also be a good get away to shed some of that little weight. Instead of parking right in front of the shop or the mall, one can decide to park a little bit further, or take a round of window shopping before settling on what to buy.

3. Eat Healthy Foods: What we feed our bodies determines how well they will function. Reduce or eliminate processed foods and sugars. Sugar decreases immune function and puts extra stress on the whole body. Eat whole foods and choose organic when possible. Cut out on the snacks that are now usually in plenty at home because of the festive mood, the biscuits, chocolates and sweets have now taken over from the healthy fruits and vegetables. Cakes and all should be eaten because after all Christmas comes only once a year, but they should be eaten in moderation putting your health first.

4. Feed Your Mind and Spirit: What we feed our mind and spirit determines how healthy we will be. Immersing ourselves in negative surroundings and thoughts will only promote a dim outlook on life. Our emotions and thoughts have a great impact on the chemical reactions that take place in our bodies. Choose peace, gratitude, compassion, faith and hope, and give it away to everyone you come in contact with.

Above all, enjoy the holidays and remember they are not only about food, but more importantly about family spending quality time together. Treat yourself to some new holiday goodies, listen to your favorite Christmas tunes, or go for a walk through a lit up neighborhood this year. The holiday season is the toughest time of the year to maintain healthy eating habits. Try to enjoy yourself without overindulging. Remember that moderation is the key to calorie control. If you eat more than you had planned, get back on track the next day and set realistic diet and exercise goals for a healthier New Year!
