12 arrested over theft in Gasabo

Twelve people have been arrested in various parts of Kigali City, in connection to the rampant theft experienced by Gasabo residents in the past few months. The operation to net the suspects was conducted by the police in close collaboration with local authorities and Gasabo residents, following continuous complaints from the residents, who claimed their homes are broken into.

Twelve people have been arrested in various parts of Kigali City, in connection to the rampant theft experienced by Gasabo residents in the past few months.

The operation to net the suspects was conducted by the police in close collaboration with local authorities and Gasabo residents, following continuous complaints from the residents, who claimed their homes are broken into.

Also recovered are stolen property, including 11 television screens, five DVD players, home theatres, radios, computer accessories and mattresses.

All suspects are currently being held at Remera Police Station. One woman was among those arrested.
Among those arrested, were housemaids and guards who connived with the robbers to break into the homes where they are employed.

Chief Supt. Rogers Rutikanga, the Regional Police Commander, Central, said that the some of the suspects were arrested after their colleagues sold them out.
Most of the theft was committed in Kibagabaga, Gisozi and Nyarutarama areas. 

Rutikanga said that similar operations will be conducted and that some suspects are still at large. He cited, Alex Kazungu who is believed to be the mastermind of the thefts.  He appealed to anyone who knows his whereabouts to report to the nearest authority.

Rutikanga called upon all those whose property has been stolen to  visit Remera Police station to reclaim their goods.
