GICUMBI - A team of 15 officials from the Fund for Support of Genocide Survivors (FARG), yesterday, carried out a screening exercise in Gicumbi District, to select the survivors who qualify for education support.

The vice mayor for Social Affairs, Eugenie Uwamahoro, who coordinated the screening, said that the exercise will help eliminate non-deserving individuals who corrupt their way onto the sponsorship lists.

The selection committee comprises, cell and village leaders together with representatives of the Genocide Survivors’ umbrella body, IBUKA.

Student survivors’ association members (AERG), are also part of the selection committees.

"The list of vulnerable genocide survivors at sector level shall be forwarded to the district for approval before being forwarded to FARG head office,” Uwamahoro said.

The screening site visited by The New Times at Kageyo Sector, brought together over 60 genocide survivors from Kageyo and Byumba Sectors.

The FARG delegate at the Kageyo site, Marie Claire Nkima, reminded those present to select vulnerable genocide survivors who had no other option for funding. 

She added that the survivors who are not content with the screening exercise, can appeal to the district authorities.
