GICUMBI- The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF), in partnership with CHF International’s Higa Ubeho project, is set to give scholarships to vulnerable children in primary and secondary schools countrywide.
The programme is set to kick off next academic year.
The announcement was made by representatives of the Ministry suring a meeting with local leaders from Gicumbi district.
The meeting aimed at determining the criteria for the selection of vulnerable children who would be sponsored.
"The categories of vulnerable children to be assisted include AIDS orphans, and children from extremely poor families,” said Silvestre Hitimana, who is in charge of legal affairs at the ministry.
Hitimana called upon local leaders to select vulnerable children right from village (Umudugudu) level, through village council meetings.
"The lists for the vulnerable children should be channeled through the Sector and District, to reach the ministry no later than December 30,” he added.
The coordinator of AIDS control committee at the district, Jack Ngarukiye, reminded local leaders of their responsibility in identifying genuine vulnerable children.
"Vulnerable children are those who cannot afford good shelter, food and have nobody to care for them,” Ngarukiye explained.
