The national crime rate has drastically gone down in the last couple of years, Supt. Jean Nepomscene Mbonyumuvunyi, from the Judicial Police said, during a live town hall meeting on Sunday.

According to Mbonyumuvunyi, the available statistics, over the last five years, indicate that cases of murder have gone down, 36 percent, rape and defilement 34 percent and robbery 4.7 percent.

He, however, noted that the trade and consumption of illicit drugs was still on the increase, calling upon Rwandans to support the police in dealing with it.

The town hall meeting aimed at discussing how to maintain the prevailing security during the forthcoming festive season.

ACP Emmanuel Butera, the Commissioner for Operations and Public Order Department, appealed to Rwandans to be responsible during the festive season.

He reminded the public to always carry their identification cards and those travelling to acquire legal and valid travel documents, to avoid any inconveniences.

The Community Policing boss, Chief Supt Damas Gatare, advised the business community and owners of entertainment spots to ensure maximum security of their clients.  He urged them to set up security checks at the entrances to their premises, to avoid people smuggle in fire arms or any other dangerous objects.

Bar and restaurant owners were also cautioned against serving alcoholic beverages to minors.

The public was assured that police’s toll free hotlines,  112, 3512 and 0788311170 are always available and should be used when the need arises.
