LONDON - The Rwandan Diaspora in Britain is scheduled to meet today in London for an extraordinary meeting to raise funds for assisting the victims of last Sunday’s earthquakes that rocked the Western Province.

At least 38 people were confirmed dead and hundreds others injured after the strong quakes shook the former Cyangugu province in the districts of Nyamasheke and Rusizi.
According to a statement issued by Rwandese Community Association (RCA) in the UK, the head of the association Eliphas Sukiranya called on the entire Rwandan community and friends of Rwanda to turn up for what he termed as ‘an extraordinary meeting to discuss measures to help the victims of this tragedy’.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the London Irish centre, 50-52 Camden square, London NW1 9xb.

He said the meeting will kick off at 5:30p.m GMT (7:30pm local time).
Sukiranya said in the statement: ‘We cannot just sit and watch when our country has been hit by such a tragedy.  We need to lend a helping hand.”

Geologists said that the earthquakes were the most powerful of the kind occurred within hours of one another with magnitudes of 6.1 and 5.0 respectively.
They first hit at around 9:35am, and the second quake came just three and a half hours later.

The tremors were also felt in Democratic Republic of Congo where it claimed hundreds of lives and in Burundi where there are no casualties or damages reported yet.
