TANZANIA ended their 16-year await after edging Ivory Coast 1-0 in yesterday’s final in Dar es Salaam.
The Kilimanjaro Stars skipper Shadrack Nsajigwa converted a 42nd spot kick to spur the hosts to their third regional title.
The penalty was a result of a handball in the 18-yard box by Elephants defender Marc Mahan as he tried to protect his face from a powerful shot by Salum Machaku.
Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessama had no choice but to point to the spot.
Despite the final score line, the West Africans were by far the dominant side and almost took the lead through Kone Zoumana.
Tanzania goalkeeper then made two excellent saves to deny Kipre Bolou and Kone Zoumana.
The home side responded well through John Bocco and Jabir Aziz Stima although their long range efforts were kept out by Ivory Coast goalkeeper Sangare Badra Ali.
After the break, both teams made changes. Tanzania head coach Jan Poulsen brought on Henry Joseph Shindira and Ramadhan Shamte while the guests introduced their top scorer Kipre Tchetche.
In the final minutes, Kaseja made two brilliant saves to deny twin brothers Kipre Bolou and Kipre Tchetche.
Earlier on, Uganda secured the $10,000 cash prize reserved for the third team after beating Ethiopia 4-3.
Tanzania were presented with a trophy and a $30,000 cash prize while Ivory Coast settled for a consolation $20,000.
Zambia’s Felix Sunzu, who scored five goals, took the top scorer gong while Nsajigwa claimed the best player award. Juma Kaseja was voted best goalkeeper while Somalia won the fair play team award.
