I have been following the issue of genocide suspects hiding either in Europe or in African countries. While some countries have acted against these suspects, others have turned a deaf ear over the matter. I am a Rwandan and most of my relatives died during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

We appeal to other countries to take a leaf from the government of Denmark who arrested Emmanuel Mbarushimana for his role in the genocide. Many suspects have remained undercover and managed to change their names.

It is sad because it has become a habit for people running away from justice, to claim persecution from the government.

Most of them are either genocide criminals or economic fugitives, who on arrival in the western cities or other cities in Africa paint a very grim picture of their home country, in a bid to gain sympathy and asylum.

Surprisingly, this trick has sometimes worked for them and they end up living a comfortable life, leaving their victims in the cold. If these suspects cannot be extradited to Rwanda, they should at least be sent to Arusha, Tanzania to be tried by ICTR.
