HOSTS Tanzania are in the final of this year’s Senior Challenge Cup after overcoming eleven-time champions Uganda in one of two semi-final games played yesterday at the state-of-the-art national stadium in Dar-es-Salaam.

After a stalemate at the end of normal time, the tie was pushed to extra –time but the teams still failed to find the back of the net bringing penalty shoot-outs into play.
Tanzania converted all their five spot kicks while Uganda’s fourth penalty by Iceland based midfielder Tony Mawejje was saved by Tanzanian goalie Juma Kaseja to light up the fully packed stadium.

Mrisho Ngassa and John Bocco came agonizingly close to winning it for Tanzania in normal time but their shots were saved by Cranes goalie Robert Odongkara.

Uganda, who were chasing for a third successive title after winning the previous two editions enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not transform it into goals.
In the second half, Mawejje and the Simba duo of Emmanuel Okwi and Robert Ssentongo had their shots saved by Kaseja.

Tanzania, who have won the title twice; 1974 and 1994, will be playing in their sixth final against Ivory Coast, the only surviving guest side in the tournament.

Malawi and Zambia were ejected at the quarter-final stage.
The elephants had Kipre Tchetche to thank after coming off the bench to score the winner on the 72nd minute against a brave Ethiopia side.

It is his fourth goal of the tournament and keeps him in the reckoning for top scorer gong.

Tchetche dribbled past two defenders Samson Mulugeta and Assefa Mengistu before beating Ethiopia’s goalkeeper Jemal Tasewe.

Prior to Sunday’s final, Uganda will face Ethiopia in a third place play-off. On top of a trophy, this year’s winner will pocket $30,000 while the losing finalist will settle for $20,000.  $10,000 is reserved for the third spot finish.
